Baby Mementos Open the Floodgates of Nostalgia
Talking with an acquaintenance about this website made her recall some corespondance with stirring memories:

“I wish we would have had a baby hand or footprint kit when I was a young mom. I started thinking about that the other day when I went through the cedar chest,” my mother’s letter started out, “when I came across an old box. I knew immediately what it was. I had tucked away some of your baby things just for a day like this. Here it is, thirty years after you were born, and this collection of nostalgia wiped those years away in a heartbeat.

“I’m so glad I kept some of your baby things. Your christening gown was on top, a little moth-eaten and yellowed, but the moment it touched my hands it was like you were a newborn in my arms again. (Your Great-Grandma Marie made that dress for you -- did you know that?) And under that was a lock of hair, tied with a pink ribbon, from your first cutting of hair. Alongside that was your first pair of booties. And there were your first pair of walking shoes. I can almost see you toddling across the floor in them now. And do you remember Bobo, your teddy bear? I picked it up and smiled, thinking that I couldn’t even begin to count how many times I sewed the seams back up when his stuffing was peeking out.”

Now I’m going to be a mother myself, in just a few months, and I can’t wait to make memories of my own. Mom’s letter really made me conscious of how fast time goes and how important it is to create baby keepsakes. I could tell that those mementoes from my infancy still bring back memories and warm her heart. The great thing is that today we have so many more options from which to choose, like a simple, no-mess baby ink footprint set. And, just yesterday, I put in an order online for a great photo and ink print frame. I can’t wait until I can give this to Mom and Dad. It’s got a space for a picture, a baby footprint or handprint poem, and inkprints.

I have to say, “Hooray for technology!” Mom never dreamed of what today’s computers can do back when I was toddling around. We’ve already talked about scanning in our precious images – like footprints – to use for birth announcements. And our digital camera is going to be great for sharing pictures with family, even those that live across the country, and my brother in the army overseas. I’m planning on sending lots of pictures via email. The digital photos will be great to print out for albums and scrapbooks, too! And, best of all, we can transfer the images to CD, so that they are easy to store and keep for later, maybe to show a hapless boyfriend or girlfriend before a first date….

(I’m already amazed at all the great ideas out there that help create such wonderful memories! I know I’m going to be just like my mom one day. I’ve already bought a Baby’s 1st Year Time Capsule to store some of my own baby’s special keepsakes in. Mom’s letter made me realize just how much my little one’s bib, or lock of hair, or special toy, will mean to me one day. Thirty years from now, I’ll be taking my own nostalgic walk down memory lane…)
